Timaru Ranks First! Gigatown in Schools, Governance Support and more

Timaru Ranks 1st for GDP & Employment growth

Go to to see the latest BERL ranking reports. Timaru District is ranked 3rd overall in the City Ranking 2013 report but first in five year GDP growth and  employment growth.

Mayor Damon Odey said “The confirmation from BERL that Timaru is out performing another 17 cities as reported in their just released Cities Rankings 2013 report is not surprising.”

In a Timaru District Council workshop held last week with BERL economics, Councillors and the ADBT Board heard from Ganesh Nana Chief Economist about the strengths of our district.” This information provides a useful comparative measure for local authorities to monitor their performance and businesses to identify areas of growth and decline” said Mayor Damon Odey “Timaru is in a pretty sweet spot with strong employment and GDP growth, while still being one of the best places to live and play!”

In 2013 GDP grew by 3.7 percent year-on-year, and over the medium-term GDP grew on average by 2.3 percent per annum. In 2013, Timaru generated just over $2 billion in GDP through approximately 5,330 businesses. The largest contributors were the manufacturing sector with $580 million and the business services sector with $340 million. Within the manufacturing sector, food product manufacturing contributed approximately $390 million. View the full report.

ADBT is stepping up the #GigatownTimaru campaign with the support of Mayor Damon Odey and the Timaru District Council with the aim of taking Timaru from its current position of 5th place as high up the leader-board as possible. In September the top five towns will go through to the final and their scores will be reset. The finals will have national coverage and may even be televised as New Zealanders choose who they will vote to be Gigatown. When you combine the possible prize of New Zealand’s best internet connection with the promotion Timaru will get and the digital education along the way - this is a massive opportunity for our town.

In schools
Students have a huge amount to gain from Gigatown. ADBT is keen to present to all schools in the region to tell them about what Gigabit speed means for them and their students.  Our first presentation was at Timaru Girls High School on Wednesday 2nd April. Students brought their devices and ADBT Gigatown Ambassador Iain Bamber asked them all to sign-up for Timaru and start using "#GigatownTimaru" on social media.
